Things to See in Flagstaff. Flagstaff is a city in Arizona that is surrounded by mountains, desert, and ponderosa pine forests. Here is a short list of the many things to see in Flagstaff.
Downtown Flagstaff
Enjoy a nice walk around the downtown area for some coffee at a local shop or for a beer from one of the many microbreweries. You can also stop for some delicious food or listen to some live music or even join in on any festivities at Heritage Square.
Wheeler Park
Wheeler Park is a beautiful open green space only a short walk from downtown. There are plenty of trees and shade, making it a lovely place to relax, read a book, or have a picnic. You can often find events such as park runs or weekend arts festivals being hosted in the summer.
San Francisco Peaks
The San Francisco Peaks contains 6 of the highest peaks in Arizona. What was once a volcanic mountain range now has almost 30 trails to hike for those who need an escape to nature. These trails vary in experience levels and offer breathtaking views. The Lava River Cave trail and the Humphreys Summit trail are two incredible and highly recommended hikes.
The Arboretum
The living museum of Flagstaff’s arboretum has over 2,500 species of high elevation plants on display. The arboretum is a 200 acre ground with various gardens, greenhouses, and natural habitats. Their open season runs from May to October, during which you can take an educational tour or guide yourself around the trails. The butterfly house is a must-see!
Meteor Crater
Meteor Crater is a mile wide crater in Arizona’s landscape from a meteor some 50,000 years ago. Although the view alone is impressive, it also has an interactive and educational visitors center where you can learn about meteorites with movies, exhibits, and a trail around the rim. Make sure to stop by the rock shop on site if you want to purchase any minerals, crystals, or quartz.
If you’ve had enough for one trip, you can always take a quick drive to Sedona, the Grand Canyon, or another nearby city!
